EPOS-ORFEUS Competence Center

ORFEUS coordinates the seismological waveform services in European Plate Observing System (EPOS). The ORFEUS European Integrated Data Archive (EIDA) federates eleven European seismological data centres into a common framework to offer: (a) long-term preservation of seismological data; (b) tools to access data and advanced seismological services and products; (c) a platform for the curation of seismological data and its description with canonical metadata and (d) procedures for attribution and citation.

The Challenge

Currently, ORFEUS-EIDA manages more than 400TB of primary data holdings exposed through a number of federated and standardised services. The amount of available data is growing steadily, attracting an increasing number of seismologists. The data archive counts hundreds of users in the scientific community who perform tens of millions of data requests every year. The EPOS-ORFEUS Competence Center will improve EIDA’s service offering with components from the e-Infrastructures service catalogue.

Workplan

In the context of the EOSC-hub project, the EPOS-ORFEUS Competence Center will focus on:

  • Federated Authentication and Authorization. To develop a production-quality service for federated access leveraging a solution based on eduGAIN and B2ACCESS.
  • Data Staging. To enable access to computational and storage resources by minimising data movements.
  • Federated data lifecycle. To investigate mechanisms to harmonise data management procedures and share best-practices between data centres.
  • User-generated products. To support the generation of data products tailored to users’ requirements.
